What is Upper Blepharoplasty?
Upper blepharoplasty, commonly known as an eyelid lift, is a surgical operation that aims to remove excess skin, muscle, and sometimes fat from the upper eyelids. This rejuvenation surgery corrects drooping or sagging upper eyelids that may be brought about by aging, genetics, or environmental factors, hence giving the eyes a tired or aged look. It rejuvenates the eyes by elevating and refining the contours of the upper eyelid, restoring a fresh, youthful appearance while improving the field of vision if sagging skin obstructs it. This procedure is in great demand among patients since most of them do not intend to change their features but rather aim at acquiring a more alert and youthful look.
Ideal Candidates for Upper Blepharoplasty
Ideal candidates for the upper blepharoplasty are individuals presenting with excessive skin, puffiness, and drooping of the skin of the eyelids. They should be generally healthy, nonsmoking patients without any medical conditions that may interfere with the healing process. Many candidates are 35 years old or above, although those with naturally sagging eyelids seek the procedure even at a younger age because of their genetic predisposition. The procedure is performed on individuals who believe that their eyelids make them appear tired, older, or even uncomfortable due to the skin falling and affecting the line of vision. A consultation with Dr. Tolga Çakıl will determine whether upper blepharoplasty is the right option for you based on your goals and anatomy.
Upper Blepharoplasty Surgery
This is normally performed under local anesthesia with sedation; however, it can be performed under general anesthesia, as necessary. Following the administration of anesthesia, Dr. Tolga Çakıl makes an incision along the natural crease line of the upper eyelid in order to minimize the appearance of scarring. He then removes excess skin, muscle, and fat through the incision, if necessary, to change the contour in a pleasing way. The incisions are then closed with fine sutures, which fade into the crease of the eyelid. This way, the final result is smooth and youthful, while the shape of the eye remains natural. The comfort of the patient is attained quite well, while post-operative edema and ecchymosis are also minimal with Dr. Çakıl’s approach.
Recovery Process for Upper Blepharoplasty
Recovery after upper blepharoplasty is generally uneventful and relatively painless. Most patients can go back to work and light daily activities within one week, although in the first few days after surgery some swelling and bruising may occur. He provides detailed post-operative care including how to keep the eye area clean and the use of cold compresses to reduce the swelling. Patients are thus generally counseled to avoid heavy work for about 2 weeks and to offer their eyes protection from sunlight with the help of sunglasses. Most of the swellings also subside in a week or two, while the incision lines smoothen out with time, merging unobtrusively with the fold of the eyelid.
Longevity & Benefits of Upper Blepharoplasty
The results of an upper blepharoplasty last reasonably long and often stay for 10 to 15 years. In general, the improved contour of the eyelids remains, although some minor changes may occur with time and ageing. Transconjunctival blepharoplasty offers an aesthetically and functionally significantly improving restoration of the youthful freshness in the eye’s appearance; in some cases, it even improves vision because it removes excess skin obscuring the field of view. As in all operations performed, Dr. Çakıl tries to achieve a natural appearance without compromising facial expression and eliminating heaviness due to aged eyelids.
